The 6 Friends go to Cusco

CLIENT

This book holds a special place in my portfolio as my inaugural children’s illustration project from 2012. It chronicles the adventures of six friends—a purposefully inclusive group of boys and girls from diverse racial backgrounds and abilities. As the third title in the series but the first I illustrated, I was thrilled to reimagine the existing characters with a fresh, vibrant look, a process I deeply enjoyed given the group’s wonderful diversity.

My illustrations bring their journey to Cusco to life, showcasing its iconic sites. Readers will explore famed landmarks such as Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, the Maras & Moray Salt Mines, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Intihuatana Stone, and the Temple of the Sun.

About the book

The 6 Friends go to cusco tells the story of six friends: Julito, Raquel, Susanita, Carlota, Jacinto, and Felipe, who travel to Cusco, Peru, at the invitation of one of their aunts. During their trip, the friends explore the Urubamba Valley and the imposing Machu Picchu, learning about local history and customs with the help of a guide named Marcos.

The story promotes values such as friendship, inclusion, respect, and appreciation of differences, as three of the friends have physical disabilities. The characters are shown to be excited and joyful about the adventure they are about to experience or are already experiencing.
